Building Mines Faster to Protect Ontario Jobs

Ontario is sitting on some of the most valuable critical minerals in the world. As President Trump’s tariffs threaten our economy and global competition increases, we’re moving faster to get those minerals out of the ground, create good-paying jobs and build a more self-reliant Ontario.

Today marked an important milestone with the first access to nickel ore at Glencore’s Craig Mine Onaping Depth Expansion. The nearly $2 billion project will support 400 good-paying, full-time jobs at full production while bringing more Ontario nickel to market.

Ontario has the critical minerals, skilled workers and industrial capacity that Canada and our allies need. Through our One Project, One Process approach, we’re cutting red tape, speeding up approvals and making Ontario one of the best places in the world to invest and build new mines.

Ontario’s mining sector already supports 150,000 direct and indirect jobs and contributes $14.4 billion to our provincial GDP every year. We’re building on that strength by unlocking opportunities like the Ring of Fire, which could create more than 70,000 jobs and add $22 billion to Ontario’s economy.

As countries compete for the minerals needed for advanced manufacturing, defence and new technologies, Ontario is now ranked first in Canada and second in the world for mining investment.

At a time of U.S. tariffs and growing global competition, we can’t afford to leave Ontario’s critical minerals in the ground.

Doug Ford and our Ontario PC team are building mines faster, strengthening made-in-Ontario supply chains and turning our province’s mineral wealth into thousands of good-paying jobs, new investment and greater economic security for generations to come.
